Farewell Christmas and 2009 . . .

Not only is it time to box up the holiday, it is time to relinquish the litany of abandoned or underachieved resolutions made 12 months ago. Personally, I'm not in favor of resolutions - and yet each January 1st I set at least a few for myself. Last year I set a goal to take a little time for 'me' and with the support of my family, I did just that with my photography. I also set a goal to give the family healthier meal options ---- that one had occasionally success, but I think we're on the right track. This year I'm setting 'family' resolutions (share the pain is my new motto!) with the objective to add more exercise to our lifestyle and to reduce the clutter. I suspect a lot of this will fall on my shoulders - but hope the family gets behind me again to make them a reality. [the 1980 comforters in the attic gotta go!] So its out with the old and in with the new.
Happy New Years everyone!

baker's dozen . . .

The challenge for this week is to select favorites from the year. I set out to pick one for each month that I have blogged but found myself with 13 - a baker's dozen.

This has been an educational year for me in terms of photography. Some old concepts were refreshed and some new concepts introduced. While there is still a gap between the knowing and the doing, I am thoroughly enjoying the process and look forward to even more improvement of my skills in the new year.

the girl LOVES her horses . . .

In a day and age where kids "love-it and leave-it" in a heart-beat, it is enjoyable to see true passion. My niece has done her fair share of dabbling over the years, but when she got started with riding and showing horses, she found a passion. She's no bigger than a minute, yet takes on her horses with love and respect and if there is any intimidation, she keeps it under control.

barn animals & stuff . . .

My sister got a Nikon D5000 for Christmas so we embarked on a day of playing. First up was an attempt to take pictures of our niece and her horses. For reasons I will attribute to too much turkey and sweets - I could not nail my focus to save my soul. Lighting was one of the key challenges - but I loved getting the opportunity and will return (at a better time during the day) and actually get some good shots. I have to tip my hat to those that routinely photography horses and other non-domestic animals (a/k/a belly stuffed and otherwise immobile) .....not as easy as they make it look!

While at the barn we had to give our regards to the other farm animals. There were several cats - all with the same markings; and if you even thought of bending down for a shot, forget it - they promptly moseyed over for the obligatory back and ear rub.

I am so impressed with how well my niece rides. I really hope to take some pictures that do her justice (got some decent portraits, but those are just for her).

We eventually made it to the Capitol. For a change I shot only with my 70-300 - and quickly realized why I have gravitated more to wide angle lenses. It was fun none-the-less.

whew! . . .

It has come and gone. Christmas with its heightened anticipation, fancy packages, excessive food, and hustle, is done. As I sat looking at the tree this evening I actually contemplated taking it all down and putting it away over the weekend - something I never consider doing until after the 1st. Maybe it is a combination of too much food, a tree barren of its packages, and just plain ole being tired. In any event, it came and went and did so quietly and uneventfully.

Keeping it simple . . .

{from the lovely flower arrangement from my mother-in-law}

We get so caught up in hunting for the right gift, decking the house from top to bottom, baking the perfect treats... *utter * holiday * chaos*. This year I have attempted to put a limit on it --well, the baking part at least. I am reminded that the "perfect" Christmas is one of being with loved ones, sitting aside differences and soaking up the laughter and wonderment of our children. In short, just keeping it simple. Wishing all a Merry Christmas - be it simple, be it perfect.

Can't think of a better way to keep busy during the holidays.

Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree

Doesn't this tree just scream for lights and tinsel?

Frosty * * *

There were several snowmen around the neighborhood, but it only occurred to me to take pics of them towards the end.

(can't you just hear the father at the home of this last one.. "honey, where are my new golf clubs?"...hehe!)

I can not begin to express how disappointed/appalled/angry my daughter was that we apparently got the lesser amount of snow accumulation as compared to our surrounding counties; no way could the roads be clear...yada yada yada! Frankly, I don't think she is bummed about not having enough snow. Lets face it, there was enough for the other kids in the neighborhood to build snowmen; it is just that she doesn't want any more teachers to have the opportunity to assign work over the holidays. I agree ---and may a heaping of coal be in the stocking of each and every teacher that gives kids, regardless of curriculum, homework over Christmas - bah humbug!

winter wonderland . . .

SNOW! In a word you can bring smiles, frowns, expletives.
SNOW! The anticipation of school cancellations.
SNOW! The dread of impassable highways.
SNOW! sledding with friends followed by hot chocolate.
SNOW! The fear of not having enough supplies if stranded.
SNOW! CraZy panicked shoppers.

SNOW! Nature's catch 22. You love it. You hate it. Either way, you have no control over it. Accepting it for me means taking pictures. This morning when I mentioned to my husband that I was going to go out today and try to photograph my header location with snow, he rolled his eyes and remarked - "yea, that's what I would do!" Snow to him means staying inside with adequate diet cokes, snacks, and football.

SNOW! Embrace it!

That'll do . . .

*** BREAKING NEWS --- WINTER STORM WATCH ***

and so it begins at 10:30 pm Friday.
I had stocked up on milk and bread earlier in the day to avoid the insanity of the evening, only to be sent out for more drinks from the school party.
Krogers = CRaZy town!

5:30 am Saturday ... flickering lights (never a good sign!)

when I later pulled myself out of bed
(where I went to hibernate after the power went out)

Welcome to my neighborhood. A view from the front.
Power back on, so now it looks pretty. When the power was out - not so much!

What the Elf ! . .

Some of you may have seen various posts about whimsical elfs - elfs named Bob, Tipsy, and Tink. Let me add another to the list, Bobby John (from the country - 2 names).
At any rate, BJ has been around for years (he's gotta be in his 40s if a day) and for the most part is reliable for doing his job (checking lists and such).

In all these years, I've never really paid attention to how much he gets around.

We're keeping a closer eye on you BJ - that last group looked a little suspect!

This week's photo of the day challenge is "dangling".
No wit, no wisdom - just dangling!

homemade bling . . .

Many [MANY] moons ago my sister ventured into hand-painted dutch style Christmas bulbs. I had the privilege of paining the cream primer while she designed and painted the flowers - very indicative of her level of artistry versus mine at the time. I'd like to think that I've stepped up my creative side since then but confess she can still out art me any day of the week! These remind me of how despite our very different personalities, we can still connect as sisters and that is more special than any Hallmark ornament.

Kitchen bling . . .

Before Thanksgiving my coffee maker quit. No biggie, with Black Friday around the corner I figured I would just find a fantastic deal and replace it. My husband, on the other hand, promptly pointed out the Keurig. It makes single servings. It doesn't waste. It. has. buttons! Apparently coffee makers were not the 'must have' item this Christmas, so there weren't any great deals on the higher end machines and wondrous sales pitch aside, I went for the $10 Hamilton Beach on/off machine, concluding it would serve the purpose.
End of story.

Fast forward to that Sunday evening. Husband flipping channels between ball games and me mostly reading and occasionally glancing up to observe the "make or break" play of the game. Suddenly I was watching the QVC show case sale on none other than the Keurig coffee machine. Not just any coffee machine - but their premiere "Platinum Brewer". Oh, those people are good. In less than 5 minutes I wanted one. I waved the white flag of defeat. Forget that they come with coffee flavors I will never drink. Forget that they are the size of a small microwave. Forget their impracticable price. In less than 10 minutes I NEEDED one. My husband just sat there with a smirk on his face, waiting to make sure I really really wanted one. After all, he had told me just a few days before that it was the coffee machine I wanted and I had fanatically declined. But now, I wanted, no needed, no MUST HAVE one (did I mention that those QVC people are good at what they do?). He waited - I sent the kid for the credit card - he waited - I conceded to the world that he was RIGHT - he waited - and that I was WRONG. Viola - early Christmas gift that makes delicious coffees, teas and hot cocos at the push of a button. Just to get him back for making me plea for it - I was tempted to wrap the box when it came in (did I mention how he does not like to wait to open gifts) - but alas I caved and now our kitchen has a little extra bling and I am enjoying single cup servings of java.

and what good is a cup of coffee/tea/coco without a little treat, so I made some chocolate oatmeal muffins (recommended by Celine over at 2Peas)
