Hello, my name is Ryan ...

and I am a beginner photographer.

___________________________

Photography is my passion. Even though I am but a Junior in high school and have only just started grasping the basics of the art, I can't help but feel a certain happiness when I look at my mother's photography as well as countless other artists I have been privileged to be exposed to through technology. I would like to start out my post by thanking my wonderful mother for giving me that point-and-shoot camera that hot summer day, and continuously supporting and pushing me to grow. I am also thankful to be living in a progressive age where art has no limits and you are encouraged to push things even further. I have many pictures that I cannot wait to share with you, and so my mom has been gracious enough to let me post twice. The first is going to be about my more "traditional" side. The second will be more about the direction towards which I aspire to grow; the more artistic and statement piece shots I was lucky enough to capture.

So, lets begin!

I was recently asked to take 'couple pictures' for a former CMHS student and her boyfriend. This shoot had many firsts. It was the first shoot of the new year as well as my first paid gig! I was undeniably nervous. When I posted my pictures on Facebook (my social media of choice for giving people their pictures) I immediately received a text from the girl, who was very happy with the results and expressed interest in doing it again. I have had similar experiences with other picture sessions with classmates, but since this was my first "official" portrait session, it made me feel even more validated.

When the client walks away from the shoot as excited as I am about the pictures, it is the most satisfying feeling ever! It's better than a kiss from your crush, or getting an A+ on that report card for me, and that was the moment I became one hundred percent sure that this is what I want to do with my life.

 Creating art,
forging smiles,
and capturing memories.

  1. Can I just say that if I looked ONLY at these shots and didn't read a word of your post...I NEVER would have thought you were a junior in high school! Your photography has a definite maturity to it that belies your years. As far as still having lots to learn...I think that will be a never ending quest. And I think it would be very sad if we knew everything there was to know about ANYTHING. I look forward to seeing more of your work :)

  2. Ryan--I look forward to seeing more of your work! You have a wonderful "eye" which is so critical for a photographer. To be able to visualize the shot, see the moment, and be able to tell the story through your images...you have that gift. And the first part of learning is recognizing that you need to learn more; we are all embarked on that never-ending journey. If you think you've learned it "all", you have stopped your progression and growth. Can't wait to see what your "artistic" side looks like. You've got talent, kiddo!

  3. Your talent oozes from the pixels! Your eye is good - helps to have such cooperative models as well, but again credit goes to you because you made them feel at ease. There is training (which clearly you have some of) and there is a natural eye (which clearly you have a lot of). I hope you put that money away for art school, because that, my dear boy, is where you belong after high school!

By the way, you are so encouraging to this mom who just handed down her first DSLR to her 12 (almost 13) year old son, and he is taking a liking to it. I'll show him your posts too.

Looking forward to post number two and your artistic side - push me beyond my comfort zone and you will inspire me!

  4. As another journeyer on the road to discovering all I can do, with my photography, I can't really offer much sage advice, just encouragement to continue and the comment that I think these shots are lovely. I like the first one in particular simply because it makes both subjects look beautiful and happy and in love, which I think was kind of the purpose of this particular exercise. Number 4 is my least favourite because they both look a littel bored, to me.

Can't wait to see your artistic side!
