light | little things Thursday

Darkness seeps in
into every crack, every crevice,
Darkness is like water and air,
It's everywhere

everywhere there is light,
there is also darkness.

~~~
Robin William's suicide this week has left me heartbroken.
Sad that someone, anyone, ever gets to the point
where the only light they can find in their darkest moment is the exit sign.
Even as a former mental health social worker, I am at a loss as to what else can be done to prevent suicide.  There are hotlines.  There are outpatient/inpatient treatment centers.
But the double edge sword of mental illness is that it is never just one ailment,
but rather a combination:
substance abuse combined with manic combined with bi-polar ...
- making it damn near impossible to get in front of
- especially as a bystander, a family member, or even counselor.
I guess until there is some revelation in science all we can offer is
hope,
options,
and awareness.
*
Whenever one door closes I hope one more opens,
Promise me that you'll give faith a fighting chance,
And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance.
I hope you dance.
  2. SO very sad. Depression is a scary illness. You can really never know the depths of it that people face or how to help in real ways. We try, of course, but it seems that many efforts fall short. I hope Robin's death will lead many to be more mindful and aware of those hurting around us.
  6. Dean Nicki,
    I got goose pumps while reading your words ... feeling the same ... Such a vast emptiness and total loss of hope, one must feel when no other choice seem possible.
