PROUD | expectedly different ...

The visits to the gym this week have been
expectedly different.

A lot (a LOT) of 'resolution members', 'gotta get in shape for that cruise members',
'I'm home over break and am bored members' have shown up, making it obviously THE place to be or be seen.  Parking was at a premium, treadmills and ellipticals a hot commodity, and the volume set slightly above 'shout'.  It is that time of year when gyms reap the benefit of all those commercials about weight loss, the staff (especially desk personnel) earn their pay in ernest, making the usual work-out experience different,
just as you would expect.

My husband gives it until the end of the month.  I say it'll last until about Valentines Day, fade for that box of chocolates, re-emerge, then go back to normal by the start of March.
But who knows!

I do know that once my husband and I joined the gym it wasn't as a 'resolution' but as a life-choice towards getting healthier.  We made the commitment and once it became instilled in our routine, we were good to go.
(if only this worked more consistently with dieting)

My neighbor, following a heart-attack, made a similar commitment to his family by paying more attention to his health, and regardless of the weather he is out there walking each and every day with his dog.

Faithfully.  Reliably.  Proudly.

I hope that by making exercise a staple in our weekly routines we can set a good example for our children to 1) appreciate the value it makes in trying to balance life, and 2) know that it is never too late to make change.  I'm not proud that it fell to the wayside for far too many years, but am proud that it is back and something I intend to maintain.

Be the change you want to see in the world.

  1. I just love that quote...and peeps who at least try!!! making a life long commitment is so hard to do. it has to be lifelong, or it's rewards will be short lived!!! and may I add, good for you!!!!!

  3. Good for you! My gym has a few more folks around since the new year...shall see how long it lasts. Although in Boston it's hard to tell if it's new years resolutions or "it's too damn cold to run outside'!

  4. Awesome that you and your hubby make it a priority to exercise consistently. I also hope the gym crowd doesn't wane too much - the more people stick with it, the better for us all.

  7. I'm proud of the way you and your husband are sticking to it! Lee and I did it for over a year, and, you'd think that was long enough to instill the habit in us, but, we've fallen off the exercise wagon. It's the head, you see. You get your head on board and anything is possible. We've kept our healthier eating habits, thank goodness. Veggies, fresh fruits, and eggs seem to be our best friends. But it's wonderful that you are exercising. You are right in that it sets up a great example for the kids.

  8. Your husband is right they will be gone by the end of the month. January is the only time I move my workout time back to 10 a.m. because I can and it is less busy. By the beginning of February all those new people will be gone. I hear ya about the dieting, eating. All we can do is keep trying and never give up trying.
