define fan please . . .

you never know what you might find when you look behind the curtain.

Jackie DeShannon
born Sharon Lee Meyer in Hazel, KY,
as a young lady she started in local radio,
going on to date Elvis,
tour with the Beatles on their 1st US Tour,
appear in several movies in the '60s,
loads of TV shows through the '70s,
and co-write 'Betty Davis Eyes' (remember that ditty from the '80s)
she actually co-wrote and performed many songs from 1956 through the '80s
and was obviously well liked by someone here in WV.

I've had my fair share of music crushes
but never once considered erecting a billboard.
I feel like I have failed as a fan;
not worthy to be the keeper of old concert ticket stubs
or concert t-shirts for that matter.

Dear members of Chicago,
I am sorry I have failed you.
Remorsefully,
Your (apparently semi-) devoted 1970s fan

  1. Very smart use of DOF! Loved this post and I suppose now I need to start penning my apologies to the Eagles...

  2. It certainly makes an interesting capture and gets one wondering what it is all about. Just someone who loves old advertising and thought this was a nifty poster, or someone who specifically decided to dedicate their garage to Jackie De Shannon?

I've never been that big a fan of anyone, although, I did once have a life sized cut out statue of Mel Gibson, as Braveheart, in my upstairs hall for about 6 months.
My older son got it from the local video store, when they were about to throw it out. His plan was to stand it beside his younger brother's bed while he was sleeping so that, when he woke up, he'd see this giant warrior waving a sword, standing over him. I vetoed that idea since I'd be the one having to deal with the nightmares or other aftermath of the trauma.

  3. Oh my--just had a massive flashback to the 60s after seeing that! I wonder if papering one's bedroom in Beatle posters counts as being a true fan? (Yes, I did)

  4. LOL!!! I have failed so many singers and actors in my life. But now, I am thinking that I should paint the side of our garage with a picture of Dave Matthews or Neil Young. I wonder what the neighbors would think.
