respect ...

As my husband and I set out to celebrate our 'actual' anniversary, we departed from the local airport with several service men and women. We fundamentally speak of our appreciation to our military personnel for defending our freedom and liberties, but as I sat there holding back emotions witnessing a little girl in tears as she clutched her mother amid reassurances and farewells, all the while a young man with precise brevity, swiftly hugged his mom, shook his father's hand, and quickly kissed his bride, whispering to her "I love you babe"; "thank you" seemed so grossly inadequate. Throughout our weekend of shopping, eating, and enjoying the latest Star Trek movie, I thought of all those young men and women heading to Kuwait. My thoughts, my silent prayers, and yes, a 'thank you' went to these fellow Americans.
But more, my utmost respect for what they do in an effort to bring civility to our world.

  1. Thank you so much for this Nicki. When my oldest, Justin returned to New Mexico from Kuwait, there is a volunteer patriotic group that sets up flags, balloons in like a little alley way at the airport as they deplane. They woo and yell and shake each of the soldiers hands welcoming them home. At the end of the receiving lines each military member is handed a little goodie bag of immediate things they might need like shampoo, toothpastes, candy, etc. It is SO moving. Watching troops leave their family is gut wrenching.
