Happy Mother's Day . . .

My son approached me a few days ago and asked if I would be interested in taking some pictures of his best bud - kind of a Mother's Day treat as it were. "What do you think" was my only response. So plans were made and it was going to be a humdinger of a photo shoot = early morning, casual attire, formal attire, country and urban. Oh, be still my heart.

The best bud he had in mind was none other than the silly little girl from down the street, the little tomboy who loved to run barefoot, do goofy dives in the pool; the silly girl who was his partner-in-crime in building forts in the woods, and made up their Harry Potter trio. They have grown up together and look out for each other like siblings. And just like my other children, she doesn't think she takes good pictures. And she isn't crazy about early mornings. and, and and . . .

And just like my other children, she did beautifully. Of course the photo shoot got derailed, I'd expect nothing less with my kids. Turns out she could only run out and take a few quick pictures because much to her surprise (but not ours) she had successfully advanced in the state Teen Idol contest requiring her to travel to the next city to compete for a position in the finals (which she made). But look at these - this is from getting ready after the "photographer" showed up at her bedroom door. This is what makes a mother's heart sing, even if that mother is from down the street.

  2. What a lovely girl! I'm sure this was a real treat for you! I just read your tribute to your mom in the previous post. Nikki, it was beautiful! Your writing reflects the often conflicted relationship some of us had with our mother, and you dealt with it fairly. I also read your comment on my blog and I'm so glad you had a chance to tell her you love her and to make peace while you had the chance. Peace is a wonderful thing. There was a lot left unsettled between my mother and me at the time of her death, but I hope that the memories have informed me and helped make me a good parent. I love your collection of memories and I think I'd like to try my hand at something similar in the near future. It might take me a while to work through some of the memories (and the accompanying tears) but it's a lovely tribute and a good reminder of where we came from. Thank you for the inspiration. Happy Mother's Day!
