strengthened resolve . . .

there is no denying that America's patriotism was strengthened by the horrific acts of 9/11/01. ten years later, flags fly in greater numbers, our military service men and women get the admiration and respect like never before, and as a whole we celebrate our independence with greater resolve.

My son had just turned 6 when the attacks of 9/11 occurred. We told him and his older sister a little of what had happened, but limited the extent to which they saw it on TV that day. In the years since, I have increased my encouragement of them to watch the 9/11 documentaries and talked to them in length of what happened and how I felt seeing it unravel in real time on TV. I have felt it important for them to understand whats and why - to the extent it can be understood. There wasn't a lot most of us could do in response to the planes crashing into buildings, loss of human life, and exposed hatred of our way of life that day - but hopefully I have fostered a stronger sense of honor and respect in my children. And I can truthfully say that there is rarely a trip where they haven't been drawn to take pictures of the American Flag not merely out of an attraction to its beauty, but out of that sense of pride and honor.

  1. I still can't believe it's been 10 years since our world changed forever. Love your sentiments and your shots.

  2. Love that last shot Nicki---something about that strong geometric background and the curves and waves of the flag. I still remember exactly where I was, and watching in absolute horror the live coverage...just in time to see the second plane hit the towers. I am glad you are teaching your kids; their world changed as a result of that day.

  3. I, too, remember exactly where I was when the towers were hit. With the experience of 10 years, I'm horrified even more today than I was when it happened. I agree with you that it's our duty to try to understand this horrific event - to the extent that it can be understood. It is also important to not forget. As Santayana said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it."

  4. I can't believe it's already been 10 years also. I'm so proud to be an American, and even more proud of our service men and women who are out there day in and day out protecting our freedom. Great shots....the whimsy of the first one and the strength of the second one!

  6. Never will forget too - I was at work, in a tall building in Montreal where people started to panic that we would be an easy target too... Beautiful shot of the flag!
