ornaments . . .

before children, my "grown-up" Christmas tree was decorated to coordinate with my furniture - blue & white --- very chic/"designer.isk" right down to the garlands of pearls. It was a step away from what I had grown up with, which was big lights (we're talking BIG), tinsel, and garden variety ornaments; many of which had been made by us kids. But as soon as my children stepped into the picture - I found myself with multicolored lights and ornaments of all types - I came back to what I'd always been, a 'family' style tree person. And over the years we've filled our tree with ornaments either picturing the kids, made by the kids, or representative of the current interest of the kids (remember that glimpse of a pink power ranger?). And, truth be told, I've always included the pets. Now, I've not found any litter pan or 'fur ball' ornaments - but there are flying cats, marionette cats, fat cats, cooking cats - basically a lot of cats (and a few dogs for those bygone years where we were a multicultural family). So I wonder, who else decorates their tree to include their pets?

  1. Oh, this is a cute ornament! Our tree has changed over the years, but I've found that once their current interest had waned, the kids didn't care to see those ornaments on the tree anymore. And nowadays, they don't seem to show any interest at all. I'm hoping this is just a phase, but I'm not sure that boys are ever all that into it.

  2. I love that you include your pets in the tree decorating! And the three little kittens ornament is adorable! :) Our tree is a mish mash of our history as a family. Each year I buy my kids a new ornament representing something they've done that year or something that signifies them in some way. Parker has lots of sports ornaments, especially running-related. Mallory has a lot of Nutcracker and dance ornaments. This year I got Nate a Chicago ornament since he did his internship this year. And Mallory and Alex got Disney ornaments to remember our trip there this year. One of my favorite ornaments is the one I got the year I visited the White House.

  4. Love the cat ornament! No room for a tree but would totally get pet ornaments if I had one!

  5. Isn't it neat how our tastes change so naturally when our kids come along? I love the kitties in the mitten, they look a bit naughty ;)

  6. If putting the unbreakable ornaments on the bottom branches so the cat can't tear them up when he bats at them counts as decorating to include pets, then yes, we do. :)
