still learning photography . . .

"I'm still learning" will always be a preface to describing my photography.
The more I know, the more I realize how much I don't know.
I think it is part-and-parcel of this craft.

Still . . .

It makes me so proud to walk beside my son as he ventures into the art.
Walking the fine line between imparting some of what I've picked up along the way
without overpowering his creativity and individual learning process.
It makes me happy to see him show a desire to learn, and I know how important it is to find something that makes you feel good about yourself.
Something that you can do and can do well enough that others stop and take notice.

he was given the opportunity to photograph two of his classmates and he eagerly accepted the challenge.

Going into the sessions
my recommendations were for him to pick either earlier in the morning or later in the evening for better (kinder) lighting,
plan out what he wanted to accomplish in advance of the session,
step back to give himself room to crop,
and enjoy himself.

He had little control over the time of day due to school and work schedules,
he did (eventually) work out a photo outline,
and despite the 84 degree temperatures, he did enjoy himself.
  {learning to step back and give himself more room will take more practice.}

  1. Yay for your son! This hobby/obsession of mine is certainly a learning thing. I hope he loves it, too.

  2. How nice to have a shared passion with one of your kids. I'm still hoping one day to experience that :)

  5. That is wonderful, he did a fabulous job! How lucky are you to be able to share your art with him?!? I have to admit I'm a little jealous! Colin FINALLY decided he wanted my old camera.....now that he lives completely across the country from us. So, I gave it to him, with a couple of books, a whibal, a gray card, and he's on his own until I go visit :)
