contemplate the Good the Random the Fun of it all ...

There are periods where one might live a life devoid of anything 'sports', but not this summer.
The FIFA World Cup has made a soccer / fútbol fan of us all,
and while it is as much a union of patriotism as it is an interest in the game,
ultimately everyone comes away knowing a little bit more about the sport.
The same is true of any event - crowd enthusiasm is contagious.
When we go to the golf tournament each year, half the fun is the excitement in the air.  My husband gets concerned that I will get bored - the point after I have walked the 18 holes, gone back and forth to the vendors for food and drink, and have put away the camera.  But that isn't the case.  I enjoy watching the personalities of the players and spectators alike.  And as is the case with my mind, I contemplate the good, the random, the fun of it all.

A very good spot to take in the tournament is at the 17th Tee
- cool breeze, beautiful mountain view, and clear unobstructed view of each golfer's tee shot.
It is also a perfect spot to observe what type of rapport exists between player/caddy and player/player.
Some walk up and go straight to work - practice swing until the field is clear to hit their shot.  Saying nothing to anyone.
Others actually talk to each other or to their caddy.
I couldn't imagine walking 18 holes - (4 hours) with someone and not talk to them.
But then, I'm not a golfer.

This is from lunch at Drapers at The Greenbrier hotel.  The decor and menu is a throwback to yesteryear of sophisticated casual with big floral/stripe and pink printed wallpaper and tablecloths. The over-run of Alicia Keys music blasting from the neighboring casino was a hiccup in the ambiance, but the tasty food made up for it.

The best part of watching any event is when the players appear to be enjoying themselves.
Last year this young man looked like someone had kicked his dog - he was all frown/all the time;
but this year he genuinely appeared to be enjoying himself at the end of the Pro-Amateur round, getting a laugh at the conversation between his caddie and the volunteer standard-bearer.

My hats off to the tournament organizer for moving the alumni center from a tent between #1 fairway and #11 green to the WV Info cottage. It got a little rowdy a couple of times, but a great location none-the-less.

Do I even have to say anything here - what isn't fun about this?

I am appreciative of the golfers who return each year,
but must admit it was cool to see some new faces from the European Tour:

Darren Clarke, Thorbjorn Olesen and Camilo Villegas

At the end of the day, it is a hard not to enjoy yourself when surrounded by such beautiful scenery and youthful energy in the air.
