nearly almost over...

It is the middle of August.
The local kids returned to school yesterday and we are one week away from packing up kiddo #2 for year two at college. The fact is, we are inching our way back to our new normal.
Part of me is ready to embrace it, the other part afraid that all too soon we will forget.
The excitement of showing off that new 1st day outfit; perfectly round tipped kaleidoscope of crayons; precisely sharpened pencils with virgin erasers;
notebooks filled with blank pages anxiously waiting to be filled with new knowledge.
Balancing the urge to quickly use everything while at the same time keep it pristine.

When we stopped at the gas station on the way to work, there was a young fella with a newly cut faux mohawk, in his new shorts and shirt getting a juice drink before starting the new year at school. The clerk smiled and wished him good luck, to which he responded with a rather disheartened sigh that he would try, "but I'm not making any promises."  Every adult in ear shot got a good chuckle and sheepishly nodded with complete understanding.
First Day of School:
the universal emotional end of summer.
A day filled with excitement, nervousness, regret, relief.
The welcome return of routine, structure, and purpose.

Summer serves its purpose in giving us a much needed reprieve, the freedom to adventure,
and just enough time for growth.

  1. Aw that is so sweet - we still have a small amount of time more, but it's ever closer!
