scavenger hunt Sunday ...

This week's words are: wrapped, time together, tell me a story, love/couple and duplicated.  Not so much words as themes in and of themselves.

So, let me tell you a story about my time together with my sister this week
where we visited the Farmer's Market and wrapped things up hunting for barns;
all the while doing what we love to do, talk and take pictures.
Regardless of how many times we do this,
the experience is never dull and never duplicated.

My sister comes back east from California once or twice a year and it almost always includes a trip to the Farmer's Market for pictures and a treat. Fortunate for me I noticed this particular flower with a stem that appears to have wrapped around itself.

After a day of snapping pictures and shopping in Charleston, she came down to my house with the hope of hitting the country roads to hunt for barns.  Living out in the sticks you'd think there would be plenty to pick from, but for the most part what we found could best be described as 'barn sheds'.  After traveling down several roads and coming up empty handed, we figured we might get lucky down 'Dairy Road'.

In no time we came upon a farm so I rolled down the window and kindly asked the man on the four-wheeler if it would be okay for us to take some pictures of his barn.  No reason.  Just for fun.  Before we knew it we had been invited to make ourselves at home and take all the pictures we wanted.

He too was soon off the 4-wheeler eager to tell us about the farm. The duplicated gourds are birdhouses for purple martins and the barn is filled with barn swallows.  Between the two there are hardly any bugs.  It was true, no bug bites at all.  He explained how he once flew planes and noticed this stretch of land, decided on the spot to buy it (he worked with the mines) and run a small working farm.

he went on to tell me a story about how wild dogs had gotten at his goats and he now only had one left; how it was a challenge to keep chickens because of the racoons, and that in addition to his Angus cows, he had a couple of horses.

as soon as I spotted the horses, I immediately thought of the little girl down the street who LOVES horses and would give anything (ANY THING) to get the opportunity to spend time with them. I promptly made a mental note to take her back in the future when I suspect the farmer will once again be happy to share his stories, eager to re-explore all the history on his farm.  Perhaps forgetting the day he was minding his own business when out of the blue he was visited by two sisters.
One from the East Coast, the other from the West.

  4. What a neat story to go along with your photos. How nice of the farmer...and how thoughtful of you to give him another chance to reminisce and share his love of the farm. I love when things come full circle like that. :)

  13. We discovered the same thing with the farmers when we were barn crawling in Michigan. They are so happy to show you around and tell you the history of their properties. It just adds to the whole experience, I think! What a wonderful time for you and your sister!
