brave | song*ography ...

 ~ Sara Bareilles ~

You can be amazing
You can turn a phrase into a weapon or a drug
You can be the outcast
Or be the backlash of somebody’s lack of love

Or you can start speaking up

Nothing’s gonna hurt you the way that words do
When they settle ‘neath your skin
Kept on the inside and no sunlight
Sometimes a shadow wins

But I wonder what would happen if you
Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

Everybody’s been there,
Everybody’s been stared down by the enemy
Fallen for the fear
And done some disappearing,
Bow down to the mighty
Don’t run, just stop holding your tongue
Maybe there’s a way out of the cage where you live
Maybe one of these days you can let the light in

Show me how big your brave is

And since your history of silence
Won’t do you any good,
Did you think it would?

Let your words be anything but empty
Why don’t you tell them the truth?

 Say what you wanna say
And let the words fall out

Honestly I wanna see you be brave

The first time I heard this song it was through a link on a young lady's blog.
I knew immediately that I wanted to purchase it
which in this house is a race to the remaining iTune bucks because of a certain teenager.

It is inspiring and motivational.
It is true.
It can be hard to be true to who you are for fear of what others might think or how they may react
but in the end, unless you are, you will live a life of lies and perpetual fear.
Sometimes you just have to dance like no one is looking in the face of the fact that everyone is doing just that.

If you ever wondered what happens when the Rose Parade is over
this is it.
Following the final float there are tow-trucks
(which I jokingly said was notice to the spectators that their parking permit had officially expired.)
{not really, they are for the floats}

Then it is a free-for-all.
From poster-board signs to make-shift floats.

March down the street
Say it

be brave

  1. Who knew? Thanks for sharing this backstage look at the parade - very interesting. Great interpretation of the song!

  2. Love the "after party" from the parade - some VERY interesting characters who are very BRAVE!

  3. wow...what amazing street photography! brave for sure!

  4. Fascinating photos! I've been to the Rose Parade, and I've been to see the floats in the staging area. But I've never seen this interesting after-parade part. Perfect for this song!

  5. I had no idea that there was such an after parade for the Rose Bowl! How interesting for others to take up the march of issues!

  6. You captured some interesting street photography here.
I wonder how many people actually stick around to witness this. It's certainly different. I believe we all should be able to say what we want but at some point we need to examine if what we want to say is really necessary or beneficial or just our selfish desire to be heard no matter who it may hurt in the process. Didn't mean to get so "preachy" but I just don't always think that people think before they speak if you know what I mean. I did enjoy your photo's and interpretation of the song though.

  7. What a great take on the song! I just love it too.

  8. Hi Nicki, The song, together with your pictures, gave me goosepumps just touching ... the indian-dressed and holding the sign, just people, their faces, walking for a cause - wonderful photos!

  9. "Poetry is a weapon loaded with future"

  10. WoW....what a GREAT entry for today's song!! i had never heard this song before and purchased it for my "I" devices as soon as i listened to it!!

  11. Bravo! What a fantastic interpretation and entry for Song-ography this week. Yes...sometimes the bravest act is to "just be". Thanks again for being such a regular at Song-ography. YOu just never disappoint :)

  12. Wonderful photos, Nicki - perfect for that song. I love the processing you used, too. It must have been quite an experience!
Right now, Sara Bareillles is my favorite recording artist - Brave is a good song, and she has even better ones. I hope you check more of her out.

  13. Very disturbing song. I guess it did its job! Happy New Year, Nicki! I hope you enjoyed your trip to California!

  14. Well, they don't show this on TV! I love these captures. They have passion. what a cool collection. This pictures Brave really well. You must have been in a great spot to get all this activity.
